How early can a dog be vaccinated?

For most patients, we suggest they receive their first round of vaccines when they start eating solid foods and are weaned from their mother’s milk. This usually happens when they are approximately 6 to 8-weeks-old. When they receive their initial injections, they should come to the hospital for further shots every 2 to 4 weeks until they are about 3 to 4-months old. This may seem like a hassle, but remember that vaccines are key to protecting your pet from serious and potentially life-threatening conditions down the road.

What vaccines do dogs need?

Canine friends need a combination of core (mandatory) and non-core (optional) vaccines.

Core vaccines include:

• Distemper
• DHPP (distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, parpovirus)
• Rabies

Non-core vaccines include:

• Bordetella
• Lyme disease
• Leptospirosis
• Coronavirus

Do adult dogs still need vaccines?

Yes. After their series of puppy vaccines before they reach 1-year-old. Adult dogs should continue to receive vaccinations every 1 to 3 years depending on the specific vaccines. The DHPP shot s usually given every 1 to 2 years, while the rabies shot can be given every 1 to 3 years. As your lifestyle and environment changes, the vet will also recommend non-core vaccines to suit your most current needs.
